Recommendations For the Best Use of Superabrasive Cut-off Wheels

For optimal performance when using Aka-Cut Superabrasive cut-off wheels (Aka- Cut 50 HV, Aka-Cut 1500 HV, Aka-Cut 2000 HV, and Aka-Cut 3000 HV), follow these recommendations:

• Set the correct rotational speed according to wheel diameter. For Diamond wheels (50, 2000, and 3000 HV), recommended speeds are 2700 rpm (150 mm), 2000 rpm (200 mm), or 1600 rpm (250 mm).
• Adjust the feed rate between 0.1 and 0.5 mm/s, depending on material hardness and sample dimensions. Softer materials generally allow higher feed rates, but controlled feeding is recommended to maintain surface quality.
• Ensure sufficient and uniform cooling on both sides of the cut-off wheel. For improved cooling efficiency and corrosion protection, use Aka-Cool additive.
• Always cut through the smallest possible cross-section to optimise cooling and cutting performance.
• Dress the cut-off wheel if required to maintain optimal cutting behaviour.
• After use, clean and dry the wheel thoroughly. Store out of direct sunlight between 5–40 °C. Shelf life is 5 years from date of purchase.

Harder materials and larger cross sections  

usually require slower feed rates than softer  

materials and smaller samples. Make sure there  

is sufficient cooling water and direct the water  

into the cut. The cooling must be uniform on  

both sides of the cut-off wheel. To improve  

cooling and prevent corrosion use Aka-Cool

Dressing Stick  

The cut-off wheel must be dressed with a  

dressing stick before initial use. If the cutting  

edge of the cut-off wheel feels smooth, it is a  

sign that it needs dressing again. This will help  

ensure continuous optimal cutting and prolong

the lifetime of the wheel  

After cutting, clean and dry the wheel

Setup & Parameters

• Flange Size: To ensure a straight cut, the flange diameter should be at least ¼ of the cut-off wheel diameter. Using smaller flanges can result in oblique cuts or wheel breakage.
• Feed Rate: Adjust between 0.25 - 2 mm/s depending on material hardness and sample size. Large cross-sections and hard materials require slower rates.
• Cooling: Direct water flow into the cut uniformly on both sides. Use Aka-Cool additive to prevent corrosion and improve performance.
